I'm giving Maxie's 2 stars only because the food isn't completely horrible and certainly you get a lot of food for your money. That being said the few times we have come here on request of older relatives I can't help but think this place has kitchen nightmares written all over it . The decor has not been updated since opening (you can safely assume) and the place just has a smell that it could use a deep clean from top to bottom. From what I can tell this place is popular among the 70+ crowd.

Our visit was overall very good, we brought our small-town parents in because we thought they would enjoy it, which they did very much! We walked in with a party of 6, and the hostess seemed very distressed that we didn't have a reservation. But we were seated fairly quickly despite that. The food was just ok-my tuna was very overlooked (ordered medium rare, received WELL done) and my fiancée'a burger was bland as could be, but those in our party really enjoyed the BBQ sandwich, Reuben, and French dip. Service was great and friendly staff!

Great place, awesome food. Their cavatelli is amazing, I recommend you ask them to put extra cheese on it. I ate there on a Saturday and they were really busy, but our server was laid back and didn't make us feel rushed.

For a really, terrific burger in WDM, you can't go wrong with Maxies. Mine was nicely charred on a grill, cooked perfectly, and I'd have to say one of the best burgers I've had in a really long time. Its been years and years since I've been to Maxies, but I'll be back soon. The place looked extremely clean. Music was being played at a reasonable level that was relaxing. It was just what I seemed to need for a late friday night dinner. My server was very pleasant, and the man who was hosting this friday night was extremely personable and friendly. When you walk into a place kind of late near closing time, sometimes the staff isn't thrilled to see you walk in the door, but I felt genuinely welcomed at Maxies.

I always have the hot beef sandwich and the mashed potatoes are never hot. It's obvious that they are made a head and warmed up, which is fine, but they need to be warmed up, literally. Today they were not only lukewarm but also had hard lumps of uncooked potatoes in them. Sandwich was not good, meat was also skimpy this time, which is rare. Wait staff is good.

Agree with those who say this is one of those places that is known in Des Moines, but why is the question. I always think too many people like quantity over quality and you will get that at Maxie's. We had a group of 13 for a family dinner. The service was adequate but overall lacking throughout. The waitress shouted at the table a general who wants something other than water. It was just easier to keep quiet than yell back. We were frustrated with the arrival of the food as for 13 people it arrived in ones and twos. The first two people in our group had their food 8-10 minutes before the last. We were left waiting for a plate of spaghetti. The food for most was merely okay to worse than that. I heard no good things other than the prime rib. They seem to be known for that. All I had were some vegetables, so I was eyeing my husband's French fries. I asked for one and was sorry. They were cold, lifeless and disgusting. Leave a McDonalds fry in the bag for several hours, and this is what you will have. For the price this is not the food or service to expect. There are lots of Des Moines restaurants with thin onion rings - you don't have to go here to get them. They are not hard to find. The place is full of older people who likely don't go many other places.

Best onion straws in Des Moines? They throw this down your throat as every item on the menu has them... They are good - but only marginally better than the ones out of can. Appetizers were mostly fried - yet the spinach dip was actually good. Service was nice enough... I had to clear my own plate, menu, Etc. When it came time to food Coming out they auctioned off the food. Food? We had enough people to garner that the food was not good. Everyone was like meh. Nothing was outstanding and some people actually disliked their foods. The dessert I ordered was rancid and it's was just nasty. Side veggies and salad were boring and awful... Onion straws were not appreciated and just not a good experience...

Disappointed. Their menu favorite - $16.99 steak sandwich ... I've been ordering it for decades - I mean since it was $7.99.... The last several times the steak has been dry. I was here prior to their dinner "rush" so there is absolutely no reason for them to over cook a "medium" steak!

We went to Maxie's the Friday night before Valentine's day, and overall the experience was okay. We started our dinner off with drinks, ordering just water and iced tea. The iced tea tasted like it was brewed in house and I loved it. They had sugar on the table so I could sweeten it to my liking. For an appetizer, we ordered the mozzarella sticks and they were the highlight of the night. The cheese tasted real, stretched nice, and was a nice balance of cheese to breading. The ranch dressing they have here is also amazing! Both of our meals came with rolls and a salad. The rolls were decent, but the butter they serve are those wrapped and refrigerated little butter packets, and make it very hard to put the butter actually on the rolls. The salad was okay, each of us getting 4 croutons, two slices of cucumber, a light sprinkling of cheese and two small slices of tomato. Again, the ranch was amazing. Both of our meals also came with a choice of potato and the "award winning" onion strings. To be honest, the onion strings were okay, but they were nothing special. I spent the extra money to get sweet potato fries and it wasn't worth it. They were very obviously from a bag and were soft and mushy instead of being crispy. My fiance's french fries were disgusting. They came out super soggy and COLD. Needless to say, they remained untouched. His steak was cooked and seasoned well, and my prime rib would rank in the moderately good category. We ended our meal with the chocolate torte, and the whipped cream served with it was very good. The chocolate icing was also very good. The cake itself was okay, and was very cold in certain spots. Overall, it was an okay place to eat, but was nothing special.

8:00 p.m. on a Thursday. Atmosphere, service and food were all great. Large portions and reasonably priced.

One star. Yes, one star. LONG time customer who will NOT be coming back. Such a shame that this place isn't what it use to me. With my most recent visit about a week ago, I ordered the long time favorite of mine, The "Maxie" Special. Before any of the food even made it to the table, I was shocked to see the price of $21.99, especially with the new absence of what I always thought was great, a plate of spaghetti. But it's Maxies, I thought. It will all be worth it. Boy was I wrong. The steak was an absolutely pathetic excuse for a steak. Small and flavorless, I was absolutely disgusted and felt as if I had just been robbed. Yes, I realized I was only getting a 7 oz. steak, but that steak should've been flawless for the price. And yes, you get a lot of other food items, but the steak is what you're paying for. I slept on the whole experience, but woke up with as bas as a taste in my mouth the morning after as I did after I took the first bite of my steak the previous night. There's not a chance in heck I ever return to Maxies and these are words I never thought I'd say.

Two words...ONION RINGS! This place is famous for the loads of skinny onions rings that come with almost anything you order on the menu. The char-chicken sandwich is just about the best grilled chicken sandwich you can get anywhere! I hear the prime rib is good too, but it's first come first serve so we've missed out a few times. Not to worry though, I haven't been disappointed by anything on their menu yet. The kids love their generous serving of homemade spaghetti and meatballs. This place is a local gem that's been around for a long time so you know they are doing something right! Nothing fancy - just good food, nice servers and a comfortable atmosphere. This place works for a date night out or dinner with the family and it's reliably good.

Onion rings are soooo good. Thin, crispy and no sog or grease. Best in Des Moines perfectly describes these. I had the Char-Broiled Chicken with steamed veggies, rice pilaf and a side of spaghetti - which weirdly enough comes standard. Odd, but awesome. Prices are a little high but the food is amazing in both presentation and taste. It was packed on a Friday night and that stands to reason! Perfect mix of diner and upscale casual. The atmosphere can be romantic or casual. 4 stars because only one server was waiting our section, which is odd for a Friday night. Service was slow because of it but our waitress was amazing. Left a great tip, because all around this was a good experience! Go here!!

This is an old-school place. Busy. Good service. Not a lot of frills and fancy schmancy menu stuff. I had the Italian sausage grinder made with local Graziano sausage. Just delicious. And the mix of fries and rings instead of one or the other was a great idea.

OK, we went with a group of about 30 and had our own room. The wait staff were very good, that is where this turns from a good experience to a bad experience. Several in our party ordered Filet at $24.99 and found it to be tasteless and chewy. I ate two bites, one by dunking the filet in A-1 sauce. There was no seasoning, and the steak had a funky flavor, like old or frozen. Everyone got a small plate of spaghetti before their dinner, some kind of second course after our salad. Maybe 3 plates of the spaghetti were touched. If you like Prego, you will like the spaghetti. The noodles were over cooked. Onion flakes???? Interesting concept, but no taste and how do you eat these, with a spoon? with your shovel hand?? Other dinners were very average, all of the steaks were chewy. One person had the tilapia and liked it. Would never go back. Never saw a manager or someone that was interested in whether our dinner was good. Another review mentioned that this might be a kitchen nightmare in the making- I agree.

We went here for New Years Eve dinner. We had reservations, and that was good, because the place was packed. Our wait time was short. We had already decided to have their special for the day of steak and lobster. We each had a salad, and commented to each other how fresh everything was. The main course was on the table in a timely matter. All was good. We enjoyed the fact that our waitress did not hover, but at the same time, took really good care of us. We will definitely return.

This restaurant has definitely picked quantity over quality when it comes to their food. I ordered the fried shrimp. The husband ordered ribs and chicken combo platter. Each came with a side salad, bread, spaghetti, choice of potato and onion rings. My husband complained his meal was dry and flavorless. My shrimp tasted like the frozen and breaded stuff I can buy at the grocery store. Salads were iceberg lettuce with dressing on top. Spaghetti sauce tasted like ketchup with some Italian seasoning mixed in. They are supposedly famous for their onion rings. They are the same shoe string onion rings that several other local joints are "famous" for. Service was excellent. Looking around at the majority of their customer base, I'd say the dinner rush at this place is somewhere around 4:30pm. I'd come back to this place, but only to take my grandparents, because I'm sure they'd love it.
